3—HEAT-TRANSFER FROM BURNING FABRICS

Abstract
The rates of heat-transfer from burning wool and cellulosic fabrics to a nearby surface have been measured by two methods for materials of different weights. The maximum heat flux is about 0·7 cal cm−2s−1. The total dose per unit area increases with the weight of the fabric, and is about 1200 calories per g of fabric but even the lightest-weight commercial fabrics are heavy enough to cause severe burns.
