Abstract
Followingihe matings to Streptopelia risoria of each of the species chinensis, humilis, orientalis, and senegalensis, antigenic characters peculiar to each of the four species have been obtained as units in backcrosses to risoria. One antigenic system, called group-4, is present in 2 different but related forms in the 4 species: eh-4 in chinensis, while hu-4 of humilis, or-4 of orientalis, and se-4 of senegalensis are indistinguishable and presumably identical. In each of the 4 kinds of backcross hybrids with the group-4 antigen, new antigenic factors (the hybrid substance) are present, and the 4 kinds of cells with the group-4 antigen are indistinguishable. Both heterozygotes and homozygotes for the group-4 antigen carry the hybrid substance on their cells, and components of the hybrid substance are found in various combinations in other species of Columbidae. No antigenic character has been demonstrated in risoria that is antithetical to the group-4 of the other species. However, the interacting gene in risoria has been demonstrated to be on a nonhomologous chromosome that carries a gene effecting a contrasting character of another antigenic system (group-8) of these 5 species.
