Visual Improvement with SMS 201–995 in a Patient with a Thyrotropin-Secreting Pituitary Adenoma

Abstract
To the Editor: A reduction in the size of pituitary adenomas has been suggested to occur in patients with acromegaly treated with a long-acting somatostatin analogue, SMS 201–995.1 We observed rapid improvement in vision during SMS 201–995 treatment in a case of thyrotropin-secreting pituitary adenoma.A pituitary tumor was diagnosed in a 26-year-old man who had had headaches and progressive visual loss of three months' duration. The thyroid gland was normal, and no signs of hyperthyroidism were present. Visual acuity was abnormal (left eye, 6/10; right eye, 9/10), and bitemporal hemianopsia was present.
