Optical-Absorption Spectrum of GdCl3·6H2O

Abstract
An analysis is performed on the spectroscopic properties of the levels P526 and P726 of Gd3+4f7 in GdCl3 · 6H2O. It is supposed that the crystal field can be represented by a cylindrically symmetric part on which a small distortion is superposed. Very good agreement is obtained for the Zeeman splittings of the components of the levels. The crystal splittings are discussed, as well as the intensities of the magnetic-dipole transitions from the ground level S728 to the P6 multiplet.
