Abstract
Glyceraldehyde inhibits the anaerobic glycolysis of tumor, brain, testis and chick embryo, and stimulates the anaerobic glycolysis of liver. It also inhibits tissue respiration. The inhibition of tumor anaerobic glycolysis is reversible and can be prevented by the addition of pyruvic acid, phosphopyruvic acid or phosphoglyceric acid. Lactic acid production by tumor from methyl glyoxal is not inhibited by glyceraldehyde. The inhibitory effect of glyceraldehyde is fairly specific for this aldehyde, since it is not produced by glycolaldehyde, butyraldehyde, or benzaldehyde.
