Heart Disease in Drivers of Public Motor Vehicles as a Cause of Highway Accidents

Abstract
ON MARCH 4, 1963, a bus belonging to the Department of Hospitals of New York City suddenly left the road on Welfare Island and crashed into the East River. In addition to the driver, the vehicle carried ten persons employed by the Department. Of these, six, including the driver, died immediately by drowning, one succumbed one-half hour after the accident, and four survived. One body has not been recovered. This report was prepared at the request of the Commissioner of Hospitals of the City of New York. The medical history of the driver was obtained in part from the Department of Hospitals and in part from the office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
