Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy of Alloys: TiNi and the Ni–Al System

Abstract
Meaningful comparisons can now be made between the soft x‐ray spectra of pure metals and theoretical densities of states distributions. The comparison of the Ni‐M3 spectrum with theoretical results is shown as an example. Also, useful information can now be obtained from alloy spectra although the analysis of alloy spectra involves all of the problems inherent in the interpretation of pure metal spectra plus additional problems. Overlapping spectra and more complex absorption corrections are two additional problems discussed. In fact, the soft x‐ray spectroscopy technique should provide a crucial test of theoretical results on alloy systems. Spectra from a series of Al–Ni compositions and the Ni‐M spectrum from TiNi are discussed.
