Abstract
First, it is shown that, coatrary to some published results, classical elasticity theory does predict the unbending forces in curved bars. This theory is then extended to the unbending forces in an idealized crimped fibre. The theoretical results show good correlation with published data. The coelficient of correlation is 0·89. In the order of decreasing importance, the parameters affecting the initial portion of the stress-strain curve are : (1) fibre diameter, (2) crimp amplitude, (3) crimp wavelength.
