EXPERIMENTAL TYPE III PNEUMOCOCCUS PNEUMONIA IN MONKEYS

Abstract
I. Experimental type III pneumonia was produced in monkeys closely resembling lobar pneumonia in man. The disease is characterized by a localized pulmonary lesion of lobar distribution which tends to spread, frequent septicemia, a sustained fever and termination of the disease after varying intervals in recovery or death of the animal. Various factors are discussed which influence the severity and final outcome of the disease.[long dash]II. Enzyme treatment exerted a distinctly favorable influence upon the experimental pneumonia preventing the spread of the pneumonic lesion and sterilization of the blood with eventual recovery. Where a marked depression of cellular activity in infected animals occurs, the therapeutic action of the enzyme is limited.
