Values for primary production in the euphotic zone were obtained for nine stations off the Cape Blanc peninsula during a hydrological survey of this upwelling area on the northwest coast of Africa. Carbon-14 techniques were adopted using liquid scintillation counting to determine carbon uptake. The results obtained range from 1–12 to 3–35 gC/m2 per day which are considerably higher than those usually found in the Atlantic Ocean.
