Abstract
The proteolytic activity of 110 yeast strains isolated from 20 controls and 90 denture wearers with yeast infection of the palatal mucosa (denture stomatitis) was tested by culture on agar with human serum protein as the sole source of nitrogen. Using the auxanographic method in 65 yeast strains proteolysis of serum albumin and growth were seen most frequently in the more pathogenic species (Candida albicans, C. tropicalis) than in less pathogenic species (C. krusei, C. macedoniensis, C. mycoderma, C. parapsilosis, T. glabrata). However, using the serum-protein-agar method to test proteolysis of serum albumin in 62 strains of C. albicans no relationship was found between the severity of the inflammatory condition of the mucosa and the proteolytic activity of the strains. The serum-protein-agar method was easier to perform and gave more reproducible results than the auxanographic method. Keywords
