Abstract
This note answers a question raised by Lloyd and Pake as to whether or not the principle of detailed balance applies in nonequilibrium steady states. It is shown that detailed balance holds only at equilibrium, and that nonequilibrium steady states must be maintained by cyclic processes.Keywords
