Treatment of Muck and Manure with 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid to Inhibit Germination of Weed Seeds

Abstract
1, 10 and 100 parts of 2,4-D were applied in soln. to 1,000 parts of muck so that the concs. were 0.01, 0.1 and 1 gm. of 2,4-D per sq. ft. The muck flats were kept in a greenhouse at 60[degree] to 80[degree] F. Many weeds appeared 2 wks. later in untreated flats and to a lesser degree in flats containing 1 ppm. of 2,4-D, but none appeared in flats containing 10 or 100 ppm. Manure containing weed seeds was treated at 10 ppm. and at 100 ppm. of 2,4-D and kept moist and warm. Seeds in untreated manure began to germinate in 3 days, but germination was inhibited at 10 and 100 ppm.
