Immunogenicity Studies in Human Subjects of Trivalent Tissue Culture Poliomyelitis Vaccine Inactivated by Ultraviolet Irradiation

Abstract
By means of u.-v. irradiation it is possible to inactivate completely all 3 types of poliomyelitis virus grown in monkey kidney tissue culture. Inactivation was proven by critical safety tests which included both repeated monkey and tissue culture inoculation. The local and general reactions produced by the u.-v. irradiated vaccine with or without the Freund mineral oil adjuvant were min. The u.-v. inactivated trivalent vaccine produced a consistent and significant rise in antibody titer to the 3 types of poliomyelitis virus in most of the 30 human volunteers studied.
