Exotic Nuclear Decay ofRa223by Emission ofC14Nuclei

Abstract
The exotic nuclear decay of Ra223 by emission of C14 nuclei has been investigated by use of an intense radioactive Ac227 source and a magnetic spectrometer with a large solid angle. After a run of 5 d, a group of eleven events was observed at the expected location of C14 in a ΔEE telescope calibrated with a C14 beam. A branching ratio of (5.5 ± 2.0) × 1010 was measured for the emission of C14 nuclei relative to α particles from Ra223 in agreement with the previously reported ratio of (8.5 ± 2.5) × 1010.
