Abstract
Rats, dogs and cats were studied in an attempt to determine the nature of the response of carrying the young. The mother is apparently not guided by instinct to grasp her young by any single anatomical part of the body. The portion grasped seems to be determined by practical convenience. The carrying behavior shows a decline in frequency after about 2 weeks in rats and after the age of 1 week in cats.
