Antineuritic Yeast Concentrates

Abstract

Improved methods of concentrating torulin are described, torulin being defined as the factor in yeast curative of symptoms of head retraction in pigeons induced by a diet of polished rice. By the removal of gum and subsequent adsorption of the torulin upon norite at p H=7.0, the yield of the active substance may be doubled and the activity improved to between 0.5-1.5 mgm. per day. Adsorption upon norite is due to the presence of a co-adsorbent in the earlier stages. The optimum p H is 7.0, provided that the extract has undergone treatment with mercuric sulphate. An improved technique for obtaining torulin concentrates of an activity of 0.2-1.0 mgm. per day is described.
