The Homing Instinct in Pigeons

Abstract
To investigate the necessity of training homing pigeons, birds reared at Millville, N. J., were shipped 80 miles northward to New Brunswick where they were released individually within 24 hrs. Despite good weather, none of 10 untrained birds returned; of 10 birds trained for half the given route, only 2 returned; however, of 9 birds given up to 18 flights with a group over the entire distance, the majority returned. The results militate against a homing instinct.
