Abstract
Ab initio calculation of the spin-orbit coupling constants for the ground state and lowest excited state of the butadiyne (diacetylene) ion leads to quantitative agreement with experiment and to confirmation of the previous identification of electronic states. The relative importance of the various contributions is considered. The potential astrophysical importance of this ion is emphasised. Keywords
