Abstract
Although hip fracture rates are higher in women than in men, for older men the lifetime risk of fractures of the femur is substantial. Very little is known about risk factors for hip fracture in men. A preliminary case control study was conducted comparing the medical charts of men with first hip fractures with two sets of age‐matched controls. The major risk factors for hip fracture that emerged were preadmission ambulatory problems, confusion, heavy alcohol use, and low body mass. Although this study is limited to a medical chart review in a veteran population, these results confirm some of the known associations for hip fracture in women. Further studies in men are recommended. Keywords
