Problems in the scintigraphic detection of osteomyelitis in children.

Abstract
99mTc-pyrophosphate studies in 21 children with acute hematogenous [Staphylococcus aureus, S. pyogenes or Escherichia coli] osteomyelitis were compared to radiographic, clinical and surgical findings. Eleven 99mTc studies revealed obvious abnormalities, 4 showed subtle abnormalities, 2 were misleading and 4 were normal. No consistent explanation for the lack of positive radionuclide findings was found. Pediatric osteomyelitis presents a spectrum of scintigraphic appearances and interpretation is often difficult.
