Abstract
The values of the ground state and the energy separations between the ground state and the excited state of and ions in a cubic crystal field have been calculated accounting fully for intermediate-coupling and -mixing effects. The results are compared with the recent experimental values of these ions in alkaline-earth fluorides and thorium dioxides.
