Abstract
A modification to the usual six-parameter Woods-Saxon parameterization of the optical model for the scattering of composite particles is proposed. This additional real term reflects the effect of coupling other channels to the elastic scattering. The analyses favor a repulsive interaction for this term, especially for particles. It is found that the repulsive term, when combined with a Woods-Saxon term, yields potentials with central values and volume integrals similar to those found by uncoupled elastic scattering calculations. These values are MeV and MeV .
