Dipole-dipole interactions in potassium chloride doped with hydroxyl

Abstract

The dielectric constant $\epsilon ={\epsilon }^{\prime }-i{\epsilon }^{\prime \prime }$ of KCl doped with O${\mathrm{H}}^{-}$ or O${\mathrm{D}}^{-}$ has been measured within the temperature range 0.1-250 K, the frequency range ${10}^2$-${10}^5$ Hz, and the concentration range 0-4000 at. ppm. Discrete features appear in both ${\epsilon }^{\prime }$ and ${\epsilon }^{\prime \prime }$ which are related to a thermally activated, two-step reorientation of O${\mathrm{H}}^{-}$ pairs. No evidence is found for a phase transition.
