Corticosteroids in the Treatment of Optic Nerve Involvement

Abstract

The marked beneficial effect of systemic corticosteroids on the vision of ten patients with optic nerve involvement associated with thyroid dysfunction is reported. The drugs must be administered in sufficient dosage and often for long periods of time. Therefore, the complications of corticosteroid therapy may occur, and they must be given as a calculated risk. This risk would appear to be justified when vision is threatened.
