Collective States inHf178via Coulomb Excitation

Abstract
Coulomb-excitation experiments have been performed to measure transition probabilities of collective quadrupole states in Hf178. A search for β-vibrational levels yielded negative results. Upper limits are placed on the excitation of the known 2+ levels at 1276 and 1496 keV. The B(E2)exc values are <~2×1051e2 cm4 and <~1050e2 cm4 for the 1276- and 1496-keV levels, respectively. Neither of these levels has sufficient excitation strength to be designated as the 2+ level of the collective β band. The J=2 level of the Kπ=2+ collective γ band is established at 1175 keV, with B(E2)exc=(10.0±0.8)×1050e2 cm4. The angular distribution of the deexcitation γ rays from this level yields δ=32 with limits δ>32 or <11, and >99% E2 multipolarity for the 1081.5-keV 2γ+2g+ transition. The reduced γ-ray branching ratio of the (2γ2g)-to-(2γ0g) transition yields a band-mixing parameter z2=(23±10)×103.
