LEUKOERYTHROBLASTIC ANEMIA WITH DIFFUSE OSTEOSCLEROSIS

Abstract

The disease occurred in a white [male], age 50 yrs. The course of the illness lasted 7 yrs. and the patient was refractory to all forms of therapy. He received 95 transfusions during the period of his illness. The outstanding features clinically were a severe progressive anemia, splenomegaly with immature red cells and immature white cells in the peripheral blood. Toward the end of the illness, diffuse osteosclerosis was present. Pathologically, the outstanding features were giant cell accumulations in the spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes, and extensive osteosclerosis, hepatomegaly, fibrosis of the liver and focal necrosis. Extramedullary hematopoiesis was present in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. Differential diagnosis was discussed.
