Abstract
The single-particle model for atoms and ions is used to calculate the transition probabilities to bound and continuum electronic states. The projection operators in the semiclassical approximation derived previously are applied to treat the large numbers of final states involved. Ionization cross sections of atoms and ions by high-energy-electron impact are then estimated. The ionization cross sections result both from direct transition to the continuum and from inelastic scattering followed by Auger emission. Keywords
