Abstract
Federally-mandated patients' rights in nursing homes support basic liberties that heretofore have been neglected and abused. While the regulations are neither complete nor incapable of subversion, they are an important step and should be articulated clearly to both staff and patients. The required training should not be limited to supervisors and administrators, but should be extended even to staff without frequent patient contact. This paper describes a series of small group sessions designed for a nursing home chain, in which staff reviewed the regulations, related concepts to their own lives and work, and developed concrete implementations for their own institutions.
