Hydrogen Molecule Ion in Strong Magnetic Fields

Abstract

A variational principle is used to determine the binding energy and the fundamental vibrational frequency of ${\mathrm{H}}_2^{+}$ in the presence of magnetic fields of strengths found in some neutron stars. It is shown that for $B\sim {10}^{12}$ G the vibrational frequency lies in the ultraviolet or soft-x-ray part of the spectrum.
