The role of polarized light in the orientation of the honey-bee has recently been elucidated by von Frisch (1951). He demonstrated that bees can orient by means of a polarized light compass reaction between the hive and feeding station using only the plane of polarization of sky-light. Vowles (1949) and Schifferer (1950) have demonstrated that the ants Myrmica ruginodis and Lasius niger can also orient using the plane of polarization of light. Orientation by means of polarized light has thus been demonstrated only for hymenopteran insects.
