Abstract
This is a contrasting survey of certain anabolic and catabolic aspects of heme metabolism. Work relating to a number of unanswered questions especially that of the possibility of a variable fate of bilirubin, is considered. The significance of dipyrrylmethene substances such as mesobilifuscin is also considered in some detail. Newer knowledge of the urobilinogen group is reviewed. Keywords
