Abstract
The training experiences of 125 recently appointed consultants in general psychiatry which were obtained by a postal questionnaire are reported, discussed and compared with the results of previous surveys. The findings show major deficiencies in certain areas of training, notably psychogeriatrics, medico-legal work, experience with ward consultation and dealing with psychiatric emergencies and in the specialties of mental handicap, child psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.
