Abstract
Recent investigations have exploded a number of misconceptions about autism. It is not a disease of the upper middle class; nor are parents etiologic agents; the children do not “tune out” but rather they never “tune in”: most important, autism is not childhood schizophrenia, and the diagnostic criteria are discriminating. Management of autism mandates close physician-family-community interactions. Keywords
