Oxygen Isotope Studies on Sea Ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Abstract

The fractionation of oxygen isotopes between sea ice and sea water in samples collected from the Gulf of St. Lawrence indicated that sea ice is enriched in its O¹⁸:O¹⁶ ratio with respect to coexisting sea water. Sources of sea ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence may be identified on the basis of O¹⁸:O¹⁶ measurements.
