Abstract
An analysis of detailed observations on flying swarms of the Desert Locust,S. gregaria, on 33 occasions in eastern Africa has demonstrated an association of intermittent flight with higher and of continuous flight with lower saturation deficits. This association, which is consistent with recent laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric humidity on the flight-performance of suspended locusts, is discussed in relation to the rate of movements of migrating swarms.
