Abstract
A brief review of the [human, animal] toxic neuropathies is impossible without first formulating a classification, which is done. A neurophysiologist might categorize these disorders according to the fiber population affected, the neurochemist according to the metabolic error, and the neuropathologist according to the structure most altered. The latter approach is endorsed because experimental evidence justifies a morphologic classification of disorders of peripheral nerves; in general this classification is understood by individuals in other medical disciplines and has proven clinically useful.
