Comparison between theR-Matrix and Eigenchannel Methods

Abstract
The R-matrix and eigenchannel methods for the calculation of the S matrix are investigated from the point of view of their range of validity and accuracy. It is shown that no serious difficulty arises in the R-matrix method provided negative boundary-condition parameters are used. Because the space of functions within which the Hamiltonian is diagonalized depends upon the eigenphases, and because of the occurrence of positive boundary-condition parameters, serious difficulties arise in the eigenchannel approach. In particular, the calculated cross sections may exhibit spurious resonance peaks.
