Gating Techniques as an Aid in Speech Analysis

Abstract
A survey is given of the various techniques applied in gating out portions of a speech utterance by means of tape cutting, mechanical suppression, and electric circuits, as found in the literature. Three aims are distinguished: to obtain objective measurements for resynthesizing speech or mechanical recognition, to establish perceptual cues through subjective measurements, to answer the question whether speech segmentation is at all possible. The various designs are evaluated in relation to the purpose for which they were built and wherever possible results are specified. The authors' various designs and overall approach are specified in the survey. In conclusion theoretical implications of applying the technique of gating are considered.
