The Neurosecretory Substance in the Neurohypophysis of the Rat during Maturation and Aging

Abstract
The amount and distribution of the neurosecretory substance were studied in rats of different age groups using the chrome alum hematuxylin method. The total amount of stainable NSS in the neurohypophysis increased with age. As the rat aged, the fine granules of NSS coalesced to form Herring bodies. The NSS was most concentrated at the border of the neurohypophysis and the pars intermedia in the aged rats.
