Enzymes Involved in the Glycogen Metabolism of the Lens in Relation to Age, Topographic Distribution, and Association with Water-Soluble Proteins

Abstract
The enzymes UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (EC 2.7.7.9), phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1) and phosphoglucomutase (EC 2.7.5.1) activity were highest in the bovine lens equator, and lowest in the lens nucleus, independent of age. The maximum activity for all 3 enzymes was found in 2.5 yr old bovine lenses which continually decreased with aging. After separation of the water-soluble protein fractions by gel filtration, phosphoglucomutase activity was associated with the .beta.low-crystallin fraction.
