STUDIES ON THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF RILEY VIRUS

Abstract
Riley virus replicated in primary mouse embryo cultures for 8 to 12 days, without any cytopathic effect. As they aged primary cultures became less capable of replicating Riley virus, and replication was not detected in primary cultures older than 14 days, or in subcultured cells. Replication occurred for longer periods in cultures of macrophages and of embryo liver than in cultures of whole embryo or of embryo minus liver. The virus could not be maintained by daily or twice weekly passage in whole embryo cultures, but was sucessfully passaged twice weekly for 80 days in macrophage cultures.
