THE EFFECT OF BACITRACIN ON RENAL FUNCTION

Abstract
Parenteral admn. of 1500 U./kg. of bacitracin on 2 successive days in 12 males was followed by proteinuria, glycosuria, and the appearance of renal tubular epithelial cells in the urine. Concommitantly, depression of the glomerular filtration rate, the maximal tubular excretory capacity for PAH and the maximal tubular reabsorptive capacity for glucose occurred. Although proteinuria was present for only 6-10 days following the injn. of bacitracin, glomerular and tubular function remained depressed over a period of wks., returning only gradually to baseline levels at approx. 2 mos. as shown by repeated measurements made at 3- to 10-day intervals.
