Physiological Changes Associated with Shock in Confined Gray Squirrels

Abstract
Shock resultingfrom confinement of certain individual gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) in live-traps was characterized by convulsions, and unconsciousness, leading to death. Confined-comatose squirrels (in shock) were compared physiologically to confined-stressed squirrels and to an unstressed control group. Physiological changes in the confined-comatose animals included severe hypoglycemia.slightleukopenia, a reduction in adrenal glucocorticoids, and elevated packed-cell volume.
