Effects of cortical spreading depression and drugs upon audiogenic seizures in rats.

Abstract

Effects of spreading depression (SD), SD plus phenobarbital, and SD plus Metrazol were investigated in 18 audiogenic seizure-susceptible rats and 24 nonsusceptible rats. SD had no effect upon nonsusceptible subjects, but decreased seizure susceptibility in susceptible SD potentiated effects of phenobarbital by completely abolishing audiogenic seizure responses in susceptible subjects. SD counteracted somewhat effects of Metrazol by increasing latency of responding, but did not change severity of the audiogenic seizure response in susceptible subjects. SD also had a long-term decremental effect on audiogenic seizures.
