Abstract
Extracts of E. coli catalyze a transfer of S from S35-cysteine to ribo-nucleic-acid (RNA), optimally at pH 8.5, in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and Mg. Of the naturally occurring nucleic-acids studied, only sRNA from several species serves as an acceptor for S. Prior treatment with periodate enhances this acceptor ability. The labeled reaction product exhibits properties consistent with those of RNA, and 4-thiouridine monophosphate (UMP) was tentatively identified as one of the labeled nucleotides released by alkali. A nonenzymatic reaction was also observed, and some of the properties of this reaction and of its products are described.
