Abstract
Study of semiannual type classification ratings by 3 inspectors working simultaneously and independently in a herd of Holstein cows over a 5-year period showed that 26% of the total variation among over-all ratings was attributable to a fluctuation of standards of inspectors. Owing to the difficulty of evaluating all characteristics on a uniform basis, the percentage was greater with all sub-ratings, ranging to 48% with feet and legs. While improvements have doubtlessly been made in the scoring system over the years, standardization of appraisal methods of those characteristics most difficult to evaluate promises still more progress in their uniform evaluation. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
