Abstract
The cloudy bag model is applied to the decay of the rho meson. The problem of two different pion states in the model is resolved by taking the bag pion as an excitation of the field pion. Evaluation of the second-order amplitudes gives a decay width in agreement with the experiment width for reasonable values of the pion decay constant, f approximately=93 MeV, and the bag radius, R approximately=4.9 GeV-1. The effect of higher-order processes on the predicted width is examined and the difficulties of a consistent mass renormalisation of the pion emphasised.
