The specific heat of strained and annealed chromium

Abstract
The specific heat of high-purity chromium has been measured in the vicinity of the Neel transition for variously strained and annealed samples. The magnetic entropy is estimated as 35 mJ mol-1 K-1 and the latent heat at TN approximately 311.4K as 1.4 J mol-1 for the annealed polycrystalline sample. A model for the strain distribution in dislocated chromium is proposed in which the local Neel temperature is assumed to depend on the linear strain in the direction of Q. This model explains shifts in TN for lightly strained chromium as well as giving a quantitative explanation of the extent of ordering in heavily strained chromium. Dislocation densities predicted for various samples by the model are tabulated for comparison with experimental values.
