Abstract
HIV infection, AIDS, and associated conditions have become the pre-eminent health care issues in correctional facilities. In the New York State correctional system alone, there have been over 1,100 cases of AIDS among inmates and up to 10,000 current inmates may be infected with HIV. The extent and characteristics of the HIV epidemic among New York State inmates are presented and used as a reference for discussions of the implications of the epidemic on the criminal justice system. Keywords
